Almost two years ago, our friend was fostering a puppy named Buster, and we saw his pictures on Facebook through a local rescue page she shared. We immediately texted her asking if we could meet him… and it was truly love at first sight.

 

Long story short, within a week we were picking him up to join our pack. Guinness came home to meet his new brothers, Simba and Rafiki, and the rest is history.

It had been a while since Simba and Rafiki were puppies, and this was my wife’s first puppy, so we were both diving into all the puppy tips we could find — including listening to a puppy podcast.

 

One day, the host had a guest talking about a raw diet and how it completely changed her dog’s life. That got my attention fast.

 

Simba has had gastrointestinal and medical issues his whole life and it was starting to add up — big vet bills, multiple diagnoses, and more and more meds. He was labeled with things like “allergies,” Irritable Bowel Disease, and deficiencies in several proteins and minerals. Even on a “prescription” kibble, his symptoms weren’t improving… they were getting worse. He was overweight, and limping after short walks.

 

So I started researching everything this guest speaker was saying, and what I learned honestly shocked me: About 70-80% of a dog’s immune system is connected to their gut.

 

The message was simple: if you support and strengthen the gut, you can support the body as a whole — and help address a lot of chronic issues that meds often just manage.

 

At that point, I figured… what did we have to lose? We switched to a 100% raw food diet.

Fast forward two and a half years, and Simba is a thriving, energetic, healthy 11-year-old puppy living life to the fullest. He’s off all medications, and his most recent bloodwork was the best he’s ever had.

 

Now I want to be clear — I’m not a veterinarian and I’ll never give medical advice.

I can only share my personal experience and what I’ve seen firsthand.

 

Watching Simba’s transformation, then seeing similar changes in my sister’s dog Harley, and hearing about so many other success stories lit a passion in me that I always knew I had — I was just too scared to dive into it.

 

Guinness was the seed of this idea… but Simba’s journey was the fruit.

And Rafiki? He just gets to reap all the benefits, as well as our new puppy Bailey!
